Tips on How to Prepare Your Teen Driver

Having your teenager turn sixteen and become a licensed driver can be a very frightening thought. You are very concerned about their safety. But, there are ways to prepare your teen driver.

A very important first step when preparing your teen driver is to send him or her to driving school. This isn't mandated in every state, but it should be. A classroom program that explains the laws and rules of the road to your teen is necessary. Handing your teen your state's license instruction manual just isn't going to work. He or she needs to be taught correctly. Next, having your teen go out onto the road with an experienced, licensed teacher will provide him or her with a strong base for all future years of driving. You know how to drive, but do you really do everything right, all the time? It's better to have your son or daughter learn from a pro. You will be surprised later on when that same son or daughter corrects you about your driving skills!

Next, take seriously the instructions from your state about how many hours behind the wheel your teen needs before getting his or her license. Have your child drive in as many situations as you can with you in the car. This will let you see what they have already learned and what they need to work on.

The day has come and your teen driver has a brand new license. Now what? It is very important to set down some ground rules. Sit down with your child and discuss how many passengers are allowed in the car. Decide when your child will be allowed to drive. Perhaps set a 9:00 p.m. limit. Most teenage accidents occur after this time. Remind your child about the laws of the road and let him or her know what the consequences are for doing something wrong. This refers not only to the legal consequences, but also to the laws of your own household. For instance, "If I find out you are driving with more than two passengers, I will take your license away for a month." Consider drawing up a contract between you and your teen driver.

Actually, in all honesty, you have been preparing your teen for this day since he or she was little. By teaching good values, maturity and responsibility to your child, you have already prepared your teen driver. Now it's time to see all your hard work pay off.
