Drivin' to save money

Insurance premiums are high, we all know this. If they weren't high, we wouldn't have ads that promise $300 savings by switching insurance companies. However, insurance is also the law in many states. Sure, you could buy an older car, or try combining policies, but what's the best way to keep more of that hard-earned money in your pockets? By driving safely, of course!

Sure, driving safely sounds easy, but how do you do it and lower your insurance premiums? Well, there's no way you can be 100% safe while driving, but these steps have been shown to help you reduce your risk of driving.

1. Stay alert. Say what you want, but remember that cars don't get into accidents as people do. If you're really tired or have had one too many drinks, it might be time to get a taxi and go home. Drunk drivers kill thousands of people annually. Don't be a statistic.

2. Speed is a killer! Okay, we all know how much of a thrill you get gunning the pedal to the metal. When you drive that fast though, you have to be exceptionally careful. Also, as high as gas prices are, you want to conserve that gas, right? Keeping the speed at 60 mph or below will give you the best fuel efficiency. In fact, you will get 17% more MPG driving at 55 mph as opposed to driving at 65 mph.

3. Leave the phone alone! Cell phones are nice to use but texting while driving increases your chance of an accident dramatically and talking on the phone without a Bluetooth headset can be extremely dangerous. A good rule of thumb when it comes to driving is: If it's a distraction, you don't want a part of it. No call is that important.

4. Remember 2-4-10. In driving school, you were taught the "two second rule". 2 seconds applies to dry road. But if it's rainy, make it 4 seconds, and if it's icy, leave 10 seconds. Also amend your speed for weather conditions. On a rainy day, drive 5-10 mph below the speed limit, while on icy roads, slow to a crawl.

With these tips you can save money on your car insurance without having to put up with mascots or calling every insurance company in the United States looking for the best rate.
